What Really Makes Us Vegas Strong?
The name Las Vegas is Spanish for “The Meadows” and was given to the area in 1821 by Raphael Rivera due to the artesian wells and extensive green areas. The area really started developing during the building of Hoover Dam in the 1930’s. Then the first elegant casinos were dreamed of and developed. Atomic testing happened in our back yard in the 1950’s. The lure and mystique of Las Vegas began to grow, along with its reputation for first class entertainment.
In my humble opinion, Las Vegas is one of the most unique and wonderful places in the world. Whether you are one of the 42.3 million people who visit this fine city annually or you live here, I am willing to bet that you would agree. There are approximately 603,000 Las Vegas residents and approximately 2.2 million people who live in Clark County.
I moved to Las Vegas almost 35 years ago, the summer of 1984, as a UNLV student-athlete. I have seen a tremendous amount of growth and changes over the years. 60,000 people move to Las Vegas annually. I have been very fortunate to meet some amazing people, the life-blood that make this city come alive and thrive 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Before I went to law school I worked in the hotel/casino industry for 10 years, six of those years at the Tropicana Hotel and then I was part of the team that opened the Luxor Hotel in 1993. I interacted with all people from all parts of the world who were both visiting Las Vegas and working by my side. I have seen spectacular buildings being built and spectacular buildings being imploded. Las Vegas is made up of strong, hard-working, dedicated people who really make this city Vegas Strong.
